I have notched up ten years as an event photographer at the London Marathon !
Working again for Marathonfoto, I managed a team of photographers on my usual course location, on the Embankment at the 40km mark. Event photography is all about the location, so even when familiar with a place, it is wise to arrive early and check sight-lines. Indeed, since the 2015 race, there has been big road changes in the area, including the installation of a large wide cycle lane. So I had to alter a few of our regular photographer positions from previous years.
A new pedestrian island however provided a good replacement with runners going both sides of the spot and a couple of bus shelters, which meant some extra space. Ensuring a nice colourful background is always a requirement which is never really a problem, as it is a prime location for the many charities that support and sponsor individuals. So loads of banners, balloon arches and people make it pretty and certainly create a great atmosphere.
Anyway, before the photos, a few numbers, for fans of statistics
