When clients first hear that I'm based in Liverpool, the most common question I get before booking a London conference photography job is: "Won't that cost more, with travel and a hotel to factor in?"
It's a fair question — but after completing a recent two-day commission at the QE2 Conference Centre in London, I want to explain why the answer is very often no.
I was recently booked as the event photographer for a two-day conference at the QE2 Conference Centre, London. The Queen Elizabeth II Centre is a government-owned conference facility located in the City of Westminster, London, close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Central Hall Westminster and Parliament Square. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1986 and can host conferences and exhibitions for up to 1,300 delegates. It is one of the capital's busiest and most prestigious venues for corporate events, awards ceremonies, and conferences. Over the two days, I covered everything from keynote sessions and panel discussions to networking breaks and the all-important awards presentation.
One of the most demanding parts of the brief was the awards ceremony photography: 40 individual awards were presented on stage in just 45 minutes. That's an award roughly every 70 seconds, each one needing a clean, well-lit, properly composed shot - recipient, presenter, trophy, stage branding, all captured cleanly with no second chances. From that single 45-minute segment alone, the client received 120 fully edited images, giving them multiple strong options per award for press releases, social media, and internal communications.
Across the full two-day event, I delivered approximately 600 fully edited, high-resolution images within 24 hours of the event finishing - covering speakers, delegates, exhibition stands, sponsor branding, and candid networking moments throughout the venue.
This is the part that surprises a lot of event organisers. Even after adding in:
My total cost still came in lower than quotes from several London-based conference photographers for the same brief. Many photographers based in the capital factor London-level day rates into every booking, regardless of the client's budget or the scope of the job. As a photographer based outside London, my day rate reflects regional pricing - and even with added travel and accommodation costs, that difference adds up to a genuine saving for the client, without any compromise on quality, turnaround time, or professionalism. Trains are quick and efficient from Liverpool now, so I can easily make a 10am start in central London.
For event organisers, PR teams, and corporate clients managing tight event budgets, that's a meaningful saving on an item that is often one of the more expensive parts of running a conference. And don't worry, I'm self-servicing, I will sort out the train tickets and book the hotel myself - I will just give you a quick heads-up about the prices before I finalise arrangements.
Speed was just as important as price on this job. Conference and awards photography have a short shelf life for maximum impact — clients need images quickly for:
Delivering around 600 fully edited images within 24 hours of the event ending meant the client had everything they needed while the conference was still fresh in attendees' minds - not a week later when the moment had passed. I crack on with edits in my hotel room in the evening and can get a lot achieved on train journeys, but trust me, I don't compromise on quality. I deliver fully post-processed, high calibre creative files, that are ready to use - both high resolution and web ready versions.

Two days and one long evening photographing a drinks industry conference and team building event here in Liverpool. The client needed images for internal and external communications, trade product content and social media channels.
